About Us
NICE TO MEET YOU
I'm Julia Kotziamani
I founded Nimble Art School (formally Hastings Art School) because I know how hard it is to make waves in your art practice around a busy modern life. I struggled to find time to engage fully with my art practice around work, and children and always felt a sense of imposter system.
Whilst studying for my MFA at Goldsmiths I experienced many barriers facing artists who live and work outside of London who do not have the privilege of wealth or formal qualifications. I knew there was a better way to support artists and build a nurturing network to help them navigate their development and the industry.
As an artist who has shown both nationally and internationally, a qualified further and higher education art teacher and a busy mother of three, I have first hand experience of what you need to where the many hats required of you in the contemporary art world.
My own practice works across several mediums exploring relational dynamics, radical pedagogy, institutional violence, the dialectics of institutional selves, and the conditions of living and working as a single mother in poverty. My work takes many forms including paper cutting, installation, relational events, writing and most recently film.
Affordable Price Tag
It is no secret that arts education programmes can be expensive. As we are non-accredited, we can keep the price low and ensure that as many people as possible could join us!
You can pay per term or for the whole year in advance (if this is your preference, please drop us an email). We want to keep things as accessible as possible and so are committed to keeping our prices fixed throughout the course with no mid-year rises between terms.
Flexible Schedule
We know time is the most significant barrier to higher education, aside from finance.
Most of us can't take a full year out of our other responsibilities to attend a traditional school or are not looking to engage in full-time study.
We have designed the curriculum purposefully so that if you need to take a break and return, you can do so between terms without taking a full year out of your studies. It is totally up to you.
High-Quality Content
Our classes are for artists who want to develop and deepen their existing practice in a critical, collaborative environment.
Nimble Art School delivers innovative, researched, and well-rounded curricula designed to be challenging and forward-facing. We want to provide the best learning environment for you to develop your work and get the most out of your practice with valuable and inspiring expert-led course content.
"With remarkably low fees and essential support, Nimble stands in stark contrast to mainstream institutions. Within its nurturing environment, I've discovered solace and a revitalised artistic spirit"
- Ollie
"I felt my work had stagnated but regular shows have given me a real incentive to produce new work and I am now excited about my art & the future. I have found it really useful".
- Mark
"I was severely lacking in confidence and didn't know how to get further with my art practice. Working with Nimble and my cohort, who are so supportive, I have had many breakthroughs.
My work would be nowhere near where it is without Nimble".
-JD
The Nimble Approach:
Nimble is an accessible alternative to a traditional art school model. The aim is to provide creative development and career opportunities to artists who do not want to, or cannot attend a traditional art school. we are proudly non-selective, diverse and flexible.
Our core offering is a flexible 30-week programme, accessibly priced, for artists at any stage of their career who want to challenge and drive their practice in a critical, collaborative environment.
We provide services traditionally supported through a post-grad level programme, whilst removing some of the difficulty local artists have in accessing similar programmes. There are no specific entry requirements and work with artists from any background, working in any medium.
We host practical workshops, short courses, lectures and student-led exhibitions, and are committed to reducing some of the barriers to learning facing lots of artists in the current financial and cultural climate.
